FlowCAM

Photograph every particle in the flow

The technology

FlowCAM, from Fluid Imaging, images particles as they flow past a high-speed camera — tens of thousands a minute — and measures the size, shape and count of each one from its actual picture, not just a light scatter. With image-based classification it can tell particle types apart, which is why it became a standard for identifying and counting algae and phytoplankton, and for any suspension where morphology matters.

Where it’s used

  • Algae and phytoplankton detection and classification
  • Water quality, harmful algal blooms and aquaculture
  • Subvisible particles in protein, cell and gene therapies (USP <1788>)
  • Any particle analysis in suspension where shape and count matter
